What causes diabetes? Diabetes is the cause of 73,000 deaths per year. It is #5 in the leading killers of Americans. Approximately 800,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. All diabetics have one thing in common – elevated blood sugar. However, there are many different causes, many of which can be managed by you!
Here is a list of the "controllable" causes of diabetes: Diet – Proper nutrition, including enough protein and fiber in the diet, and reducing the refined, or processed products that you eat or drink.

Being Overweight Inactivity – If you live a sedentary lifestyle, you will be more susceptible to diabetes. Stress – You can help reduce your stress level with proper exercise, as well.

Smoking – If you are a smoker, you are highly susceptible to diabetes. High Cholesterol – In many cases, high cholesterol can be reduced with a proper diet and exercise program. Pregnancy (Gestational Diabetes) Following is a list of common causes that you may not be able to control as easily:
Age – 80% of Diabetes cases are diagnosed after the age of 50. Hereditary – You can inherit diabetes from your parents. The risk increases if both parents are diabetics. Sex – Diabetes is more common in elderly men and in women with multiple pregnancy or suffering from Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Virus Infection – Coxsackie B and Strephylococci may be responsible for infection in the pancreas. Hypertension Drugs – Some drugs cause this disease (clozapine, olanzapine, quetiapine, ziprasidone, and risperidone). If you are taking any of these drugs, you may want to discuss your risk factors for diabetes with your doctor.
